STATUS & CHARACTER

Led by Ali Froggatt
See upcoming dates below!

This course will give you tools and training to spontanously create believable and entertaining characters in scenes. We will explore techniques of status and power dynamics, physical acuity, outragous attitudes and more. We will mine the comedic potential of authentic human behaiour, so you can expand your character range and create compelling stories in any improvisational style. Side Show Performance on the final class.

Inspired by the Bechdel Test—coined by American cartoonist Alison Bechdel to highlight how rarely women in film talk to each other about something other than a man—this workshop invites participants to explore gender representation in storytelling. Through discussion and creative exercises, we’ll examine how our narratives can move beyond traditional tropes, create space for a wider range of identities and experiences, and reflect the full complexity of human relationships.

The Art of Audience Care

with Ali Froggatt

July 3rd - July 24th
6PM - 8PM

The audience is nothing to be afraid of!

This workshop is designed for performers who aspire to transform interactions with their audience into unforgettable theatrical experiences. We focus on the art of engaging directly with the audience to gain personal stories over simple suggestions. Through this approach, performers learn to create a charming and meaningful connection, making each performance uniquely resonant with the audience.

Impro & Realism

with Frank Totino

August 2nd - 6th

In life we learn to read each other and to recognize the meaning of spontaneous behaviours in others. Spontaneity is real. Reality is spontaneous.

First will be an exploration of some concepts of human behaviour through Impro exercises designed (by Keith Johnstone and others) to create experiential learning in this area.

We will apply the concepts to improvised performance and, if there is an interest, to text and scene work. We won’t change the writing, but we will find that there are many ways of exploring it on the way to something meaningful.
